OpenOffice cannot and never could install the updates. Currently the check for updates fails for some people. You have to and have always had to install them yourself. If you've disabled the automatic update check and don't use the Check Now button in the OpenOffice's Preferences dialog, you won't have the freeze problem you experienced. Thus that problem is/was solved by following the procedures below.Someone marked this as solved but it is not
Q22/A22: How do I tell what version of OpenOffice I have?
If http://www.openoffice.org/download/ says a more recent version is available then install it, which will overwrite the old one.
Q03/A03: How do I install OpenOffice on a Mac?
OpenOffice updates are few, far between, and have mostly minor changes. There is little risk in waiting a year, or even three, between checks for a new version. The most recent version is almost identical to the OpenOffice 4.1.10 which your forum signature says that you run. I've been running 4.1.7 since 2019 and have no plans to upgrade unless I run into a specific problem I am experiencing which a new version would fix.
If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit ☐ button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.
